The crack ran diagonally down from the upper corner of a window, about the width of a pencil line.
The homeowner had dealt with it twice. Patched, sanded, painted. It came back both times, in the same place, along the same line.
You could actually read the history in the wall. Around the crack, the paint sat in slightly different tones where each repair had been feathered in, like rings in a tree stump marking the years.
She wanted to talk about products. Which filler, which paint, whether something stronger existed.
Our first question had nothing to do with any of that. When did it last get longer?
She went and got her phone. She had photographed it in 2022 when she first patched it, again in 2023, and once more that spring. Same length in all three. It had opened and closed slightly with the seasons, but the ends had not moved in three years.
That answer, not any product, was what made her wall worth finishing.
The Short Answer
Most settlement cracks are cosmetic, but width and pattern decide.
Under 1/16 inch and stable: seal it and refinish with a flexible coating. Growing, wider than 1/4 inch, stair-stepped or horizontal: get a structural evaluation before spending anything on appearance.

Is It Settling or Is It Serious?
Nearly every house settles. Concrete cures and shrinks, soils compress, framing dries out and moves. Some cracking is the normal result and it stops on its own.
The job is separating that from the cracks that mean something.

Width Thresholds in Plain Words
Under 1/16 inch is hairline. You cannot get a fingernail into it, and on most houses it is cosmetic.
Around 1/8 inch, roughly a credit card, something has genuinely moved. That is not automatically bad news, because settlement that happened years ago and stopped leaves exactly this behind.
Over 1/4 inch is where it stops being a finish conversation. Get an opinion first.
Reading the Pattern
Pattern tells you cause, and it matters as much as width.
Vertical cracks are the most common and generally the least concerning, particularly near openings or where materials meet.
Diagonal cracks from window and door corners are settlement’s signature. Openings are the weak points in a wall, so movement releases there. One stable hairline diagonal on a house that has been standing for decades is usually old news.
Stair-step cracks follow the mortar joints in brick or block, stepping across and down. Treat these as differential foundation movement, meaning one part of the foundation has moved relative to another, until someone qualified says otherwise.
Horizontal cracks are the one pattern that should move you along quickly, especially with any bulge or bow in the wall. That combination suggests pressure pushing against the wall rather than the house settling under it.
The Growth Question Beats the Width Question
This is the thing we have learned to ask first, and almost nobody asks it.
A 1/4 inch crack that has not changed in five years is a scar. A hairline crack that has grown a full inch in eighteen months is a symptom.
Width tells you what happened. Growth tells you whether it is still happening. Of those two, only the second one changes what you should do next.

Why Kentucky Houses Settle
Local geology explains a great deal of this, and it is worth understanding before you assume something is wrong with your house.
Much of Kentucky sits on clay-bearing soils that swell when they take on water and shrink when they dry out. That is a seasonal cycle, repeated every year, directly under your foundation.
The Kentucky Geological Survey does not treat this as a minor issue. Its land use guidance notes that expanding soils exert several tons per square foot of pressure on foundations and shallow pilings over time, enough to deform walls and break masonry.
The trigger is water, and the sources are ordinary ones. KGS lists percolation, drains, lawn sprinklers, and leaking sewers or water mains as ways water reaches and swells the soil beneath a foundation. That is a useful list, because three of those four are things a homeowner can actually control.
Parts of the state also sit on karst terrain, where limestone dissolves over time and creates subsidence hazards. KGS notes these can usually be managed with planning and site evaluation, though collapses beneath existing structures are among the hardest problems to detect in advance.
Then add age. Louisville’s older neighborhoods have housing stock that has been standing through a century or more of those wet and dry cycles. Some settlement in a hundred-year-old house is not a defect. It is a track record.
How to Monitor a Crack Like a Pro
Five minutes, a pencil and your phone. This is the highest value thing in this article.
- Mark both ends. Draw a light pencil line across the crack at each end. Write the date beside each mark.
- Photograph with scale. Place a coin or ruler at the widest point and take a clear, well-lit photo.
- Record the width. A note like “card fits” or “card does not fit” is perfectly adequate.
- Re-check quarterly, plus once after a very wet stretch and once at the end of winter.
- Compare like for like. Same angle, same spot, same method.
Three stable readings across a year is real evidence. It turns “I do not know if my house is okay” into “this stopped moving, proceed with the finish.”
If it has grown past your marks, you also have exactly the documentation an engineer will want.
Who to Call, in What Order
Order matters here, because two of these three parties sell repairs.
When It Is an Engineer First
Call a structural engineer when the crack is over 1/4 inch, stair-stepped, horizontal, accompanied by any bowing, or measurably growing. Also call one if doors and windows have started sticking, or floors have gone noticeably out of level.
An engineer sells you an opinion. They do not install piers, so their recommendation is not shaped by what they happen to sell. On a borderline wall, that independence is worth every dollar of the report.
When a Foundation Company Makes Sense
Once an engineer has confirmed active movement and specified what is needed, foundation contractors are who carry it out. Bring the engineer’s report to the quotes and ask each company to price the specified scope rather than their own diagnosis.
That single step changes those conversations completely.
When It Is Nobody
This is the majority, and nobody on the internet says it clearly enough.
If the cracks are hairline, stable across a year of monitoring, and there are no other symptoms, you do not have a foundation problem. You have a finish problem, the same category as flaking or faded paint elsewhere on the house. Hiring a foundation company for a stable hairline crack is like calling a surgeon about a scar.

Why the Crack Keeps Coming Back Through Paint
Here is the mechanism behind the frustration that brought you here.
Even a stable crack is not motionless. Walls expand in summer heat and contract in winter cold, and a hairline crack opens and closes slightly with them every year.
Standard paint is a thin, comparatively rigid film. It has almost no capacity to stretch across that gap. So the filler holds, the crack line moves a fraction of a millimeter, and the paint splits along exactly the same line it split along last time, the same rigidity problem behind bubbling paint when moisture is pushing from the other direction.
Then Kentucky winter compounds it. Water gets into the reopened line, freezes overnight, expands roughly 9 percent, and works the crack slightly wider. Our winters cross the freezing point repeatedly rather than staying cold, so that happens many times each season.
The answer is a finish with flexibility rather than a harder filler. Elastomeric-class coatings are formulated with crack bridging in mind, so the film moves with the wall instead of fighting it.

Now the part that matters more than any of that. We coat walls that have stopped moving. If a crack is actively growing, we will ask for monitoring history or an engineer’s assessment before quoting, and if that is not available we will ask you to get it first. A 25-year warranty cannot sit on a wall that is still in motion, which is exactly why the warranty keeps us honest about this.
If your cracking is specifically in stucco, that material has its own crack-width thresholds worth understanding before you finish it. How long should I monitor before repairing? A full year is the practical answer, since it captures every seasonal condition. Three stable quarterly readings, including one after winter, is reasonable evidence that movement has stopped.
What finish stops cracks reappearing? A flexible, elastomeric-class coating rather than a rigid paint film, applied after the cracks have been properly repaired and once movement has stopped. If you have been patching the same crack every few years, the frustrating part is that you were probably never doing anything wrong. The repairs were fine. The finish over them simply could not stretch.
Start with the pencil marks and the photos. In most cases that exercise ends with good news and a wall that just needs finishing properly.
