You put in the work. You washed the siding, rolled on a fresh coat, and stepped back proud of it. Then a few weeks later the new paint is flaking off in your hand, chalky and loose.
It is a story we see often, especially in the older aluminum-sided neighborhoods across Central Kentucky. A lot of those homes went up when aluminum was everywhere, and decades of sun have left the siding powdery.
We coat aluminum siding in this region all the time, so we know exactly why the paint refuses to hold. Here is what is really going on and how to make it stick.
The Short Answer
Paint will not stick because oxidation has left a chalky, powdery layer on the metal. New paint bonds to that loose chalk instead of the siding, so it peels right off.
Do the chalk test first. Then wash and de-chalk the siding thoroughly, prime any bare or weathered areas with a bonding primer, and finish with a quality exterior product.
If the chalk keeps returning, or you are tired of repainting every few years, a high-build ceramic coating bonds to prepped aluminum and does not chalk out on the same clock.

Why Paint Won’t Stick to Aluminum Siding
The metal itself is usually fine. The problem is the thin layer sitting on top of it, and once you understand that layer, the fix makes sense.
Oxidation and chalking explained
Aluminum siding comes with a baked-on factory finish. Over the years, sun and weather break down the binder in that finish, and the pigment releases as a fine powder.
That powder is chalking. Run your hand down a weathered wall, and the white or faded dust that comes off is the old paint slowly giving up. Dunn-Edwards, a major paint manufacturer, describes this same chalking breakdown as UV degrading the binder until it powders.
Here is the catch. Fresh paint needs to grip a sound surface, but chalk is loose by nature. Coat over it and the new paint sticks to the powder, not the metal, so it lets go within weeks.
The chalk test (do this first)
Before anything else, find out how bad the chalking is. This takes ten seconds and decides how much prep you are in for.
Rub your open hand or a dark cloth firmly across the siding. Then look at what came off.
- Heavy white or colored powder on your hand means active, significant chalking.
- A light dusting means mild chalking that a good wash can handle.
- Little or nothing means the surface is closer to paint-ready.
Repeat the test on a few walls. The south and west sides take the most sun and are usually the chalkiest, so do not judge the whole house by the shaded north wall.
Other adhesion blockers
Chalk is the big one on aluminum, but it is rarely alone. A few other things quietly wreck adhesion, and prep has to clear all of them.
- Mildew and algae, common on shaded, north-facing walls in our humid climate
- Dirt, pollen, and grime built up under the eaves
- Loose, flaking old paint that never got scraped
- A glossy factory finish that was never scuffed to give new paint some tooth

How to Prep Chalky Aluminum So Paint Actually Bonds
This is where the job is won or lost. On aluminum, prep is most of the work, and skipping steps is the single most common reason a repaint fails.
Wash and de-chalk
Washing is the most important step, full stop. The goal is to remove as much chalk as possible so what remains is sound and tight.
- Use a cleaning solution with a detergent, plus a mildewcide where mildew is present.
- Agitate the heavy-chalk zones, especially under eaves and on sun-beaten walls, with a soft bristle brush.
- Rinse thoroughly at a pressure that cleans the panels without denting them.
A word on pressure washing. It works, but aluminum dents and gouges easily, so keep the tip back and let the cleaner and brush do the real work instead of blasting up close.
Then let the siding dry completely and run the chalk test again. If powder still transfers heavily, wash that area a second time. Do not move on until the surface passes.
Repair, scuff, and prime
With the siding clean and dry, turn to the surface itself. Small fixes here save you from bubbles and streaks later.
- Address dents and any loose or rattling panels before you coat.
- Scrape and feather-sand loose paint so the edges are smooth, not ridged.
- Re-caulk failed seams and gaps so water cannot get behind the siding.
- Prime bare metal, repaired spots, and heavily weathered areas with a quality bonding primer.
You do not always need to prime every square foot. But bare aluminum and badly weathered sections need that bonding primer, because it is what actually anchors the topcoat.
The product choice
Product matters as much as prep on aluminum. The wrong can of paint can undo a good wash.
Use a quality 100 percent acrylic latex exterior paint. It stays flexible and moves with the metal through our hot summers and cold winters.
Skip interior paint entirely. It has no real UV or weather resistance and will fade and fail fast outdoors. Bonding additives that help latex grip chalk do exist, but they are pro tools, and leaning on one to skip proper washing is how DIY jobs go wrong.
DIY or Pro? A Simple Decision Guide
Some of this is a fair weekend project. Some of it is not, and knowing the difference saves you money and a redo.
DIY is reasonable when:
- The chalking is light and washes off easily
- The area is small, single-story, and safely reachable
- There is no widespread peeling or exposed bare metal
Call a pro when:
- The chalk is heavy and keeps returning after washing
- It is a full house, two stories, or hard to reach safely
- Paint has already peeled once, which points to a prep or product problem worth solving properly
When David goes out to look at a chalky aluminum home, the depth of the chalk is what shifts his recommendation. Light chalk is a wash-and-coat job. Heavy, stubborn chalk changes the whole plan.
Paint, Coat, or Replace? The Third Option Competitors Skip
Most articles stop at “wash it and repaint.” That is not wrong, but it leaves out the real choice in front of you. You actually have three paths.
Repaint. Done right, a fresh acrylic job on well-prepped aluminum holds up. The honest catch is that it weathers and chalks again, often in about 10 to 15 years, and then you are back to washing and repainting.
Replace. Tearing off aluminum and installing new siding is a major expense. For siding that is structurally fine and just chalky, it is usually far more than the situation calls for.
Coat. This is the option the repaint-or-replace conversation skips. A ceramic coating system bonds to properly prepped aluminum, then builds a film about 8 to 10 times thicker than standard paint.
