The approach we use is called soft washing. It is low pressure plus a cleaning solution that kills the algae at the root, not just knocks the color off the surface.
The basic sequence looks like this:
- Wet down the plants and landscaping around the wall first, and cover what you can.
- Apply the cleaning solution from the bottom up, so it does not streak over dry siding.
- Let it dwell. Give the solution real time to kill the growth, not just rinse the surface.
- Agitate gently with a soft brush only where you need to.
- Rinse thoroughly, top to bottom, with normal garden-hose pressure.
Working bottom-up matters more than people expect. Solution running down dry siding leaves clean streaks that are hard to even out later.
One rule we never break: do not spray up into the seams, laps, and joints of the siding. That is how water gets behind the wall.
Why High-Pressure Washing Backfires
We understand why people reach for the pressure washer. It feels faster. But on siding it usually causes more problems than it solves.
High pressure aimed at siding can force water up behind the panels and into the wall cavity. Once water is behind vinyl or lap siding, it does not dry easily. That is exactly the trapped-moisture recipe that grows mold on the inside.
It can damage the surface, too. It gouges softer materials, drives water into seams, and strips the finish so the wall gets dirty again faster. A wall chewed up by pressure holds grime and algae worse than a smooth one.
Soft washing kills the algae without any of that. It is slower by a few minutes and far safer for the house.
DIY vs a Professional Wash
A careful homeowner can absolutely handle a light case on a single-story wall. If the growth is thin, the wall is reachable from the ground, and you are comfortable working steadily, a DIY soft wash is reasonable.

Even with the conditions improved, a plain wash on tired paint or bare siding usually stays clean for only about 12 to 18 months before the green creeps back.
