You walk the perimeter of the house after a long, sticky summer, and there they are. Little domes and bubbles rising off the siding, sometimes clustered on one wall, sometimes scattered across it.
It looks like the paint is breaking out in a rash. That is frustrating on any home, and it stings even more when the paint job is only a year or two old.
We are a ceramic coating contractor, not a traditional painting company, and blistered siding is one of the most common things we get called out to look at. Here is what those bubbles actually mean and what you should do next.
The Short Answer
Bubbling (the trade calls it blistering) means the paint film has lifted off the surface beneath it. In almost every case the cause is trapped moisture or heat, and in humid Kentucky it is usually moisture.
Do not just scrape and repaint over it. Find the cause first, remove the loose film, let the surface dry fully, prep it properly, then recoat with a breathable system.
If the bubbling is a small patch on a sunny wall, it is often a do-it-yourself fix. If it goes down to bare wood or spreads across a wall, get a professional to check the moisture source before you spend a dime on paint.
Why Exterior Paint Bubbles After a Humid Kentucky Summer
Paint is supposed to bond tight to whatever is under it. A blister forms when something breaks that bond and lifts the film into a pocket. Two forces do this, and our Ohio Valley climate is hard on both.
Moisture blistering (the Ohio Valley default)
This is the one we see most on Central Kentucky homes. Water vapor gets behind the paint film, then heat makes it expand and push the film outward into a dome.
The water rarely comes from the storm that day. It comes from humid air, morning dew, and moisture that soaks into wood siding and other materials that never fully dry out on shaded walls.
Latex paint is especially vulnerable if dew or humidity reach it before it has cured. On a north-facing wall that stays damp and in shadow, the film almost never gets the dry window it needs.
Heat blistering
The second cause is simpler. When paint goes on a wall that is baking in direct sun, the surface skins over before the layer underneath can bond.
Solvent and moisture get trapped under that skin, and as the wall heats through the afternoon, they expand and bubble. You see this most on the west and south walls that take the hardest summer sun.
The prep and product failures that set it up
Climate pulls the trigger, but poor prep usually loads it. Most of the early blistering we find traces back to a handful of shortcuts.
- Painting over a damp, dirty, or chalky surface the coating could never grip
- Skipping primer, or using a cheap primer that cannot tolerate moisture
- Putting fresh paint on late in the day so dew settles before it cures
- A thin, low-grade film that has no flex and no staying power
None of these are exotic. They are the ordinary corners that get cut when a job is rushed, and our humidity punishes every one of them.
Why our climate makes this worse than most
The Bluegrass gives paint a brutal year. Humid summers keep walls damp, then winter drags us through repeated freeze-thaw swings around 32 degrees.
Moisture soaks in, freezes, expands, thaws, and works the paint loose a little more with each cycle. Purdue University’s extension service documents this same freeze-thaw and vapor pattern as a leading driver of blistering and peeling on painted siding.

How to Tell What Caused It (the pop-the-blister test)
Before you fix anything, find out which force you are fighting. There is a quick field test our crew uses on every assessment, and you can do it yourself in seconds.
Pick one blister and break it open. Then look closely at what is sitting at the bottom of the pocket.
- Bare wood, stucco, or masonry underneath. The blister went all the way to the substrate. That points to moisture, and you have to find the water source before repainting.
- An older coat of paint underneath. The blister lifted only the top layer. That points to heat, which is about application and timing, not a wall full of water.
Sherwin-Williams describes this same split between moisture and heat blistering in its professional blistering guide, which lines up with what we see in the field. That one small test tells you almost everything about what to do next.

When bubbling signals water damage you should not ignore
Most blistering is a surface headache. Some of it is a warning about what is happening inside the wall, and a few signs mean you should stop and investigate.
- Blisters that go to bare substrate across a whole wall
- Soft, squishy, or damp spots when you press the bubble
- Staining, dark streaks, or a musty smell near the area
- Clusters right around windows, gutters, or roof lines
Those patterns often mean bulk water is getting in through failed caulk, flashing, or gutters, not just everyday humidity. Left alone, that trapped moisture is exactly what leads to wood rot behind the siding. What to Do Right Now
Once you know the cause, the path is clear. How you handle it depends on how much wall is affected and how deep the blisters go.
If it is a small, surface-level area (do-it-yourself friendly)
A few heat blisters on a sunny wall, with old paint showing under the pop test, is a reasonable weekend job.
- Scrape off all the loose, lifted film with a putty knife or paint scraper.
- Run the scraper edge a few inches past each bubble to catch hidden loose spots. If more paint peels, keep going until the edges hold firm.
- Feather-sand the edges so the repair blends in instead of leaving a ridge.
- Clean the area, then let it dry completely. Do not rush this step in humid weather.
- Spot-prime the bare patches, then recoat with a quality exterior product.
The step people skip is drying time. If you seal moisture in because the surface only looked dry, the blister comes right back in the next warm stretch.
If it is widespread or goes to bare substrate (call a pro)
When the pop test shows bare wood, or blisters cover large sections, spot repairs are a losing game. The water source is still there, and fresh paint over a wet wall will fail the same way.
At that point the job is diagnosis first, coating second. That means tracing the moisture, correcting caulk, flashing, or drainage issues, letting the wall dry out, and only then recoating. This is the stage where a real assessment saves you from paying for the same wall twice.
How to Stop It From Coming Back
Here is the part most articles leave out. They tell you to scrape, prime, and repaint, then send you straight back into the cycle that caused the blisters in the first place.
Standard paint is a thin, fairly closed film. In a humid climate, vapor that builds up behind it has nowhere to go, so it lifts the film again during the next warm, sticky spell.
This is why so many homeowners we meet have repainted a shaded or storm-exposed wall, only to watch it blister again the following August. The paint was never the real problem. The lack of a way for vapor to escape was.

Why is my exterior paint bubbling after summer? Because heat and humidity worked on the film all season. Trapped moisture or solvent under the paint expanded in the warmth and pushed the film up into blisters. In Kentucky, moisture from humid air and damp, shaded walls is the usual culprit.
Should I pop paint bubbles? Pop one on purpose to diagnose the cause, then look at what is underneath. Beyond that, do not go around bursting them, since open blisters expose the surface and can let in more water. Plan to scrape and prep the whole affected area instead.
Is bubbling paint a sign of water damage? It can be. If the blister goes to bare substrate, feels soft or damp, or clusters near windows and gutters, water is likely getting into the wall. That deserves a proper inspection before you repaint, because trapped moisture leads to rot.
Can you paint over bubbling paint? No. Painting over blisters traps the same problem, and the new coat fails too. You have to remove the loose film, fix any moisture source, dry and prep the surface, then recoat.
Will bubbling paint go away on its own? No. A blister is a broken bond, and it will not reattach itself. It tends to spread as more film loses adhesion, so it is far better to address it early than to wait.
What is the difference between heat blisters and moisture blisters? Heat blisters form when paint is applied to a hot, sun-baked surface and lift only the top layer, so you see old paint under a popped bubble. Moisture blisters form when water vapor behind the film expands, and they go down to bare substrate. The pop test tells them apart in seconds.
