The homeowner had already fixed this wall. Three times.
Each round went the same way. Sand the brown dot, dab on paint, step back, looks perfect. Eighteen months later the dot is back in the same spot, slightly larger, with a rust-colored tear running down from it.
By the third round she was fairly sure the paint was defective.
We did not count the dots. We counted the fastener rows.
Every course of siding on that elevation had the same neat line of stains, spaced exactly like the nails behind them. Not a few random failures. Every fastener on the house, doing the same thing at the same rate.
At that point the diagnosis is not about paint at all. Something happened to the nails decades ago, most likely a prep job aggressive enough to sand the protective coating off the heads, and every one of them has been bare steel in a humid climate ever since.
Touching up dots was never going to win that fight.
The Short Answer
Rust dots at nail locations mean the fasteners have lost their protective coating and water is reaching bare steel.
For a handful of spots: sand each head, spot-prime with a rust-inhibitive primer, fill, then topcoat. Paint alone will not hold, because rust migrates straight through it.

Why the Dots Keep Coming Back
Here is the part nobody explains, and it decides everything else.
What Bleed-Through Actually Is
Rust is iron oxide, and some of the compounds it produces are water soluble.
That is the whole problem in one sentence. When moisture reaches a corroding nail head, it dissolves part of that rust, and the resulting solution moves. Paint films are porous at a microscopic level, so as moisture works its way outward, it carries dissolved iron with it and deposits it on the surface as it evaporates.
The stain does not sit under your paint waiting to be covered. It travels through it.
That is also why the stain often appears as a dot with a tail running downward. That tail is the path the water took.
Why Latex Alone Always Loses
Standard latex paint is a fine topcoat and a poor barrier against a moving stain.
Put fresh latex over an untreated rusty head and the process starts again immediately. Moisture gets to the fastener, dissolves more oxide, and the stain reappears through the new film. Behr’s own technical guidance for painting contractors describes exactly this failure pattern and the countersink-prime-caulk sequence needed to stop it.
What stops it is a stain-blocking, rust-inhibitive primer. Those primers do two jobs at once: they seal the surface so soluble material cannot migrate through, and they inhibit further corrosion on the metal itself.
Skip the primer and you are not fixing anything. You are scheduling the same afternoon again next year.
How It Started: Three Roads to Rusty Nails
Knowing which one you have tells you whether the problem is contained or systemic.
Wrong Nails From Day One
Plain steel nails were sometimes used on exterior siding where corrosion-resistant fasteners were called for, either as a cost decision or by mistake.
If that is the cause, the rust usually starts young. Stains appear within a few years of installation and show up everywhere at once, because every fastener has the same defect.
Good Nails, Dead Coating
This is the most common story we find on older homes, and it is the one from the wall above.
Galvanized nails are protected by a zinc coating. That coating is sacrificial and it is not indestructible. Technical research on galvanized fastener corrosion shows hot-dipped galvanized nails can resist corrosion for thirty to eighty-five years depending on coating thickness, but that protection wears away through decades of weather, and it can be removed much faster than that by aggressive prep. Sanding, wire brushing or hard scraping across a nail head takes the zinc off in seconds.
Once the zinc is gone, the steel underneath behaves like any bare steel outdoors. The nails were fine. The prep killed them.
Cedar’s Extra Twist
Cedar and redwood contain natural tannins that make them rot resistant, which is why they were used for siding in the first place.
Those same tannins are acidic, and when wet they accelerate corrosion of steel fasteners. Cedar also produces its own dark tannin bleed, so on a cedar house you can be looking at two different stains at once, similar to the layered damage we see on cedar siding that woodpeckers have also gotten into.
This is why stainless is the usual recommendation for cedar rather than galvanized, a point trade guidance on siding fasteners makes explicitly.
Ten Dots or Ten Hundred? The Scale Test
This is the question that decides your weekend and your budget.
A Handful of Spots: The DIY Fix
If you can count the stains on your hands, this is a genuine do-it-yourself job and you do not need a contractor.
- Wash the area and let it dry completely.
- Sand each nail head back to clean metal with fine paper. You want the loose oxide gone.
- Countersink any proud heads slightly with a nail set, so they sit just below the surface.
- Spot-prime every head with a rust-inhibitive, stain-blocking primer. Two coats on the worst ones. This step is not optional and it is the step everyone skips.
- Fill the recess with exterior filler or a quality exterior caulk, then sand smooth once cured.
- Prime the filler, then topcoat to match.
Materials for this come in under $50 for most homes. The work is tedious rather than difficult.
Rows on Every Course: Why Spot Fixes Become Whack-a-Mole
Now the other scenario.
When every fastener on the wall is corroding, spot repair stops being maintenance and becomes an ongoing subscription. You fix twenty this spring. Thirty different ones show up next year. The wall never looks finished, and the touch-up patches themselves start to show as the surrounding paint fades around them, the same slow fade you’ll see described on our faded exterior paint page.
Here is the reframe that helps people decide: at that scale you are not treating stains, you are managing a failing fastener system across an entire exterior. The question stops being how to remove a dot and becomes what finish will hold over hundreds of compromised heads at once.
The Systemic Fix
Whole-wall failure calls for whole-wall treatment, and the sequence matters more than the product.
Every fastener gets addressed during prep rather than after the fact. Heads are cleaned and set, every one gets spot-primed with a rust-inhibitive primer, recesses are filled, and then the entire surface receives a bonded finish thick enough to stay intact over those repairs for decades rather than years.
That last part is where conventional repainting keeps losing. Standard paint goes on thin, and it is thinnest exactly where the surface is uneven, which includes every filled and primed fastener location. When the film thins and opens, moisture reaches the head again and you are back at the start, the same mechanism behind bubbling, blistering paint elsewhere on a house.
Rhino Shield is a ceramic coating rather than a paint. It is spray applied in two coats over a bonding primer, at 8 to 10 times the thickness of standard paint, and it carries a 25-year warranty. On a wall with hundreds of prepped fasteners underneath, that film thickness is the entire point.
Prep is where the outcome is decided, though, not the product. Any coating over an unprimed rusting head will fail exactly like paint did.

Look at the bottom two rows together. That combination is the real cost of a systemic fastener problem, because each repaint cycle is another opportunity for the heads to telegraph back through.
Choosing Fasteners if Boards Come Off Anyway
If any siding is coming off for repair, use the opportunity.
Stainless steel is the best performer and the most expensive. It is the right answer for cedar and redwood because it does not react with tannins, and it is what most manufacturers recommend for premium wood siding.
Hot-dip galvanized carries a thick zinc coating and performs well outdoors for decades. It is the practical middle option for most wood siding.
Electro-galvanized has a much thinner coating applied differently, and it does not last outdoors the way hot-dip does. It is not the right choice for exterior siding.
Fiber cement has its own fastener requirements from the manufacturer, generally corrosion-resistant fasteners of a specified type, worth knowing if any part of your Hardie board or fiber cement siding is due for repair. Follow those rather than substituting.
One realistic note: replacing every fastener on an existing house is rarely worth it. Set, prime and seal is the standard approach, and it works when the prep is thorough.
Louisville Humidity Is Not on Your Side
Corrosion needs moisture and time, and our climate supplies both generously.
Louisville takes roughly 45 inches of rain a year with humid summers, so siding here stays damp longer than in drier regions. That is more hours per year of moisture sitting against fastener heads, the same dampness behind the mildew growth we see on a lot of the same walls.
Winter adds the mechanism that lets water reach them. Our temperatures cross the freezing line repeatedly rather than staying cold, and that cycling opens micro-cracks in aging paint films, often first at the small ridges and dimples around nail heads.
Then there is the housing stock. The Highlands, Crescent Hill, St. Matthews and similar pre-1980 neighborhoods are full of wood and cedar siding that has been painted many times over many decades, which means many opportunities for prep to have taken the zinc off those heads.
Mid-century aluminum siding here shows a parallel version of the same story. The factory enamel breaks down under years of UV and releases its pigment as a fine powder, and aluminum oxidizes and pits, particularly where the finish has worn through or where moisture sits. Frequently Asked Questions
Why are nail heads rusting through my exterior paint? The protective coating on the fasteners has failed, either because non-corrosion-resistant nails were used, or because the zinc on galvanized nails wore away or was sanded off during past prep. Bare steel plus moisture equals rust, and the rust migrates out through the paint.
Will rust come back through new paint? Yes, if you paint over untreated heads. Some rust compounds are water soluble and move through porous paint films with moisture. Only a stain-blocking, rust-inhibitive primer over cleaned metal stops that migration.
What primer stops rust stains? A rust-inhibitive, stain-blocking primer. Both properties matter: one seals against migration, the other slows further corrosion. Every major manufacturer makes one, and the category matters more than the brand.
Do galvanized nails eventually rust? Yes. The zinc coating is sacrificial and wears away over decades of weather exposure. It can also be removed in seconds by sanding or wire brushing during prep, which is why old, well-maintained houses sometimes develop this problem all at once.
Should I replace rusty nails with stainless steel? Only where boards are already coming off for other reasons. Replacing every fastener on an intact wall is disruptive and rarely justified. Set, prime and seal is the standard fix. If you are re-siding or replacing boards, stainless is worth it, especially on cedar.
How do I remove the stains without repainting? Gentle washing lifts fresh surface staining, and oxalic-acid-based wood cleaners can reduce rust marks on bare wood. On a painted surface, be cautious: aggressive cleaners dull the finish, and the stain returns anyway if the head underneath is untreated.
Is nail rust a sign my siding is failing? Not necessarily. It is a fastener and finish problem more than a siding problem. But it does mean water is reaching the fasteners, so it is worth probing the surrounding wood for softness while you are up there, the same check we recommend on our wood rot page.

Stop Repainting Dots
If you counted a dozen stains, take the DIY steps above and enjoy your weekend. That fix holds when the primer step is done properly.
If you counted rows, the arithmetic is worth running before you book another paint job.
Conventional exterior paint lasts roughly 5 to 10 years, less on wood. Across 25 years that is three to five repaints, and every one of them is another chance for those heads to bleed through again. Compare that to preparing every fastener once and sealing the wall with a coating built to stay intact for the same period.
That is the case, and it is arithmetic rather than salesmanship. Run it with your own numbers.
