Most people find it by accident. They are washing the house, or hanging string lights, or running a hand along the siding before getting paint quotes.
Then a thumb sinks in slightly where it should not, and the day changes.
We get called out to that exact moment constantly. The homeowner walks us to one spot, usually about the size of a hand, and asks how much of the wall we are going to have to tear off.
So we take out an awl and start probing. An inch to the left of the soft area, the wood is firm. Six inches up, firm. Then we work down toward the window sill below it and the awl slides in again, into a second soft pocket nobody had noticed, right under the corner of the drip cap.
That is almost always the real story. The visible spot is not where the problem started. It is just where the problem finally came through the paint.
The Short Answer
A soft spot means water has been getting into the wood long enough for decay fungi to go to work. Probe it to find the true extent, trace the water source that fed it, replace anything that crumbles, treat and fill what is still sound, then refinish so the water path stays closed.

The Five Minute Triage: Press, Probe, Map
This is the part no other article gives you, and it is the part that decides everything else. Do it before you price anything.
Step 1: The Press Test
Press firmly with your thumb across the area and about a foot in every direction. You are sorting the wood into three categories.

Do not stop at the first soft spot you find. The press test is a survey, not a single reading.
Step 2: The Screwdriver Test, Done Properly
The classic test is often described badly, so here is the version inspectors actually use.
Take a flat screwdriver or an awl and push it into the wood at a shallow angle, using moderate pressure. Not a stab. Steady, controlled pressure, the same amount every time.
- It barely marks the surface. Sound wood.
- It goes in a quarter inch with effort. Early decay, treatable if you fix the water.
- It sinks in easily, or the wood peels away in fibers. The board has lost its structure.
The consistency matters more than the force. If you push hard on one spot and gently on another, you are comparing nothing.
Step 3: Map the Spread
Now probe in a grid. Every twelve inches or so, working outward from the soft area until you get firm readings in all directions.
Pay particular attention to these places, because they fail first:
- Board ends and butt joints
- The bottom edge of each course, where water sits
- Under window sills and at the corners of trim
- Within about two feet of the ground
- Anywhere caulk has cracked or pulled away
Mark each soft reading with chalk or painter’s tape as you go. When you step back, the tape usually draws a picture of where the water has been running.
What One Visible Spot Usually Hides
Here is the pattern from years of doing this on real houses.
The spot you can see is rarely the worst one. Paint holds its shape over soft wood for a surprisingly long time, so the failure becomes visible only after the wood underneath has been going for a while.
More often than not, the visible spot is downstream of the actual leak. Water enters somewhere higher up, at a failed drip cap, a gap in the caulk, a missing piece of flashing, then runs down behind the paint film until it finds somewhere to sit, sometimes surfacing later as water stains under a window after a storm.
That is why we probe the grid before we quote anything. Fixing the spot you can see, while the entry point above it keeps feeding water into the wall, buys you about two seasons.
Why It Went Soft: Find the Water Source First
Decay fungi need three things: wood, oxygen and sustained moisture. You cannot remove the first two, so the entire game is moisture.
Before repairing anything, check these six sources. One of them is almost always responsible.
- Failed caulk joints. Look at trim edges, corner boards and where siding meets windows. Cracked or shrunken caulk is an open door.
- Gutter overflow and splash-back. Clogged gutters dump water down the wall. Missing splash blocks bounce it back onto the lower courses.
- Missing kickout flashing. Where a roofline meets a wall, water needs to be directed into the gutter. Without that small piece of flashing, it runs straight into the siding.
- Ground contact. Siding closer than about six inches to soil or mulch wicks moisture continuously.
- Sprinkler overspray. Irrigation hitting the wall multiple times a week keeps the lower siding permanently damp.
- Cracks in the paint film. Once the finish opens up, every rain feeds the wood behind it, the same way bubbling paint signals moisture already working from behind.
Fix the source first. Every repair after that is temporary if the water keeps arriving.
Wet Rot, Dry Rot, and What Actually Matters
You will see these terms everywhere, so here is the practical version.
Wet rot needs wood that stays consistently damp, and it stays local to the wet area. That is what you will find in most siding failures. Dry rot is the misleading one: it still needs moisture to start, but the fungus can carry moisture through the wood, so it spreads further from the original wet spot than people expect. For your purposes the distinction changes very little. Both need moisture, both destroy the wood’s structure, and both get handled the same way. The rot type is interesting. The water source is what matters.
Repair or Replace: The Decision Tree
Four scenarios, in increasing order of seriousness.
Small, Dry, Isolated Damage
If the affected area is small, the surrounding wood is firm, and everything has dried out, this is a repair.
Remove the soft material back to sound wood. Apply a liquid epoxy consolidant, which soaks into the remaining fibers and hardens them. Fill with a two-part structural epoxy filler, shape it, sand it, then prime.
This is genuinely a DIY project for anyone comfortable with basic tools. You do not need us for it, and any contractor who says otherwise is worth a second opinion.
One or Two Rotten Boards
Once a board crumbles under the probe, filler is not the answer. That board gets replaced.
On lap siding that means releasing the course above, cutting the damaged section out at the studs, and installing a matching board. Get three things right: match the profile, prime all six sides of the new board including the cut ends, and correct the flashing detail while it is open.
An experienced homeowner can manage this. Most would rather not, and that is a fair call.
Soft Sheathing or Spreading Rot
This is where it stops being a siding job.
If the probe passes through the siding and finds soft material behind it, water has been inside the wall assembly, not just on it. The sheathing, the housewrap and possibly the framing need inspecting, and that means opening the wall.
Bring in a professional at this stage. Not because it is dramatic, but because closing it back up without knowing what is behind there is how small problems become expensive ones.
When Rot Is Near Windows, Doors, or the Roofline
Treat these as pro-level automatically, however small the soft spot looks. These are the intersections where flashing details live, so rot there usually means a flashing failure rather than simple weathering. Repair the wood without correcting the detail and you will be back at the same spot in two years.

The gap between a $700 repair and a $17,000 replacement is mostly time. Rot found in year one is a filler job. The same rot found in year five is a wall.
Making Sure It Never Comes Back
Here is the part that decides whether you read this article again in four years.
Why the Repaint Cycle Is the Weak Link
Look at how the standard advice ends. Repair the rot, repaint the house, then repaint again every five to seven years and keep the caulk maintained.
That advice is not wrong. It is just fragile.
Conventional exterior paint on wood is a thin film. It expands and contracts through Kentucky’s summer humidity and winter freeze cycles until it cracks somewhere. Water finds the crack. The wood behind it starts holding moisture again. By the time the next repaint is due, decay has often already restarted underneath, and repainting seals it in, the same cycle that shows up as faded, chalking exterior paint on homes overdue for attention.
That is the loop: rot, repair, repaint, crack, rot. Every turn of it costs more than the last.
The Permanent Version
Breaking the loop means putting something on the wood that does not open up in five years.
Rhino Shield is a ceramic coating, not a paint. It is spray applied at 8 to 10 times the thickness of standard paint, with roughly 80 percent solid content and ceramic microspheres in the film. Louisville Wood Siding Has It Harder
This problem is not evenly distributed across the country, and local conditions explain a lot of it.
Louisville sits in a humid subtropical climate and takes roughly 45 inches of rain a year. Wood siding here spends a large share of the year damp, and damp is the one condition decay fungi require. The same dampness is why mildew growth tends to show up on the same walls that are struggling with rot.
Winter adds the second mechanism. Our temperatures cross the freezing line repeatedly rather than staying cold, and each cycle works on the paint film. Micro-cracks open, water gets in behind the finish, and the following summer’s humidity does the rest.
Then there is the housing stock. Old Louisville holds one of the largest collections of Victorian-era homes in the country, and the Highlands and Germantown carry blocks of late-1800s and early-1900s frame houses. Original cedar and pine siding, and in many cases a century of accumulated paint layers hiding what is underneath. We see the same pattern show up as woodpecker damage on cedar siding in the same neighborhoods.
Frequently Asked Questions

How fast does wood rot spread? It depends entirely on how wet the wood stays. Dry it out and decay stalls. Keep feeding it water and damage progresses through a season, which is why the water source matters more than the repair method.
Will homeowners insurance cover rotted siding? Generally not. Most policies, as Policygenius explains, treat rot as gradual damage from maintenance issues rather than a covered sudden event. There can be exceptions when rot results from a covered incident, so check your specific policy language.
