The call usually starts the same way. Someone tells us woodpeckers have wrecked the trim under their roofline, and they want to know what it costs to make it look normal again.
Then we get a ladder against the house and find something different. The woodpeckers were real, but they were not the cause. They were the cleanup crew.
Behind the torn-open wood sits a row of clean, round holes, each about half an inch across, each turning a sharp corner into a tunnel that runs with the grain. Carpenter bees drilled those. The woodpeckers just followed the larvae in.
We see this pattern every spring across older homes with original wood siding and trim, and it teaches the same lesson every time. By the time the damage is ugly enough to notice from the driveway, you usually have two problems, not one: an active pest and the wood rot that follows behind it.
The Short Answer First
Confirm the holes are carpenter bees, treat the active tunnels in spring, wait until the larvae emerge before you seal anything, then fill the holes in late summer or fall. Replace boards that feel honeycombed. Finish the repaired wood with a thick, durable coating, because bare and weathered wood is exactly what brings the bees back next year.

How to Tell It Is Carpenter Bees and Not Something Else
Most homeowners guess right, but the confirmation matters. The treatment for bees is nothing like the treatment for termites, and the repair plan changes if the wood is already decayed.
The Three Signs You Can Check From the Ground
Look for these together, not just one:
- Perfectly round holes, roughly half an inch wide. They look drilled, because effectively they were.
- Sawdust below the holes. Entomologists call it frass. You will see it on window sills, deck boards, or the ground under the eaves.
- Bees hovering near the roofline in spring. The ones that dart at your head are males. They cannot sting. The females can, and they are the ones doing the drilling.
If all three show up on the same run of trim, you have carpenter bees.
Carpenter Bee, Bumblebee, or Something Worse
Carpenter bees and bumblebees look almost identical in flight. The difference is the abdomen. A carpenter bee’s is shiny and mostly hairless. A bumblebee’s is fuzzy and usually banded with yellow. The species doing this damage across Kentucky is the eastern carpenter bee, Xylocopa virginica, as described by Ohio State University Extension.
Termites are a different situation entirely. They leave mud tubes and hollowed, layered wood, not clean round entrances. If you probe the board and it collapses into soft fibers rather than firm wood with a tunnel in it, get an inspection before you plan any repair.
What We Usually Find When We Probe a Damaged Fascia
Here is the part homeowners rarely expect.
We carry an awl on every exterior assessment. When we find a bee hole, we do not just look at it. We probe above it, below it, and a foot to each side.
The entrance is almost never the whole story. A female bores straight in about an inch, then turns and tunnels along the grain, often six to eight inches, sometimes further where boards have been reused season after season.
So the visible hole count tells you very little. The probe tells you whether the board is still sound or whether it has been quietly emptied out behind the paint.
How Much Damage Can They Really Do?
Short answer: one season is cosmetic, five seasons is not.
One Season Versus Five Seasons
A single female making one gallery does not threaten your roofline. The University of Kentucky Extension is clear about this in its carpenter bee factsheet (EF-611). The concern is repeated infestation of the same wood, year after year.
That is what actually happens on fascia and rake boards. Bees return to wood that already smells and looks like a good nesting site. Galleries branch. Boards that took one tunnel in year one can carry a dozen by year five.
At that point the board is not really solid wood anymore. It is a shell around a network of tunnels.
The Woodpecker Multiplier
This is the fastest way a small problem becomes an expensive one.
Woodpeckers hear and smell the larvae inside the galleries and open the wood to get them, a behavior confirmed by University of Georgia Extension’s entomology program. A neat half inch entrance becomes a jagged trench several inches long. We have seen sections of fascia that would have needed a plug and some filler turn into full board replacement because the birds got there first. If you see fresh woodpecker work on trim, assume there is something inside worth eating.
The Hidden Problem: Open Galleries Let Water In
This is the part nobody talks about, and it is why we take carpenter bee damage seriously as a coatings company rather than as pest people.
UK Extension notes that the holes facilitate moisture intrusion, rot, and decay. That is the real chain. Bee makes a hole. Rain follows the hole into the end grain. Wood stays wet longer than it should. Decay fungi start working, and the wood can end up looking like the trim in our post on water stains that show up under windows after a storm.
Two or three seasons later the homeowner is no longer dealing with bees. They are dealing with wood rot repair on a board that a caulk gun could have saved.
If your fascia already feels soft or spongy where the holes are, the bees are the old news. The moisture is the current problem.
What to Do Right Now, Step by Step
Order matters here more than product choice. Doing the right steps in the wrong sequence is the most common mistake we see.
Step 1: Treat the Active Tunnels
Spring and early summer is when the galleries are active and treatable. Insecticidal dust applied into the entrance hole is the standard approach, because the adults carry it deeper into the tunnel than a spray can reach.
Leave the hole open after treating. This feels wrong to most people, and it is the single most important instruction in this whole article.
Step 2: Wait Before You Plug Anything
If you seal an active gallery, you trap developing larvae inside. They do not politely give up. They chew a fresh exit, often through the face of the board or straight out the side, and now you have new damage next to your repair.
Give it time. Plug the holes after the new adults have emerged, which generally means late summer into fall.
Step 3: Fill the Holes Properly
Once the gallery is empty, close it so it cannot be reused and cannot channel water.
A good sequence for a sound board:
- Push steel wool or a wooden dowel into the opening to fill the void near the surface.
- Cap it with exterior wood filler and let it cure fully.
- Sand flush, then prime the repair. Bare filler and bare wood are both invitations, the same way bubbling paint or flaking exterior paint signals a surface that has already let moisture in.
Corks and pre-made plugs sold for this purpose work fine. What matters is that the hole ends up sealed and finished, not just cosmetically covered.
Step 4: Decide Whether to Fill or Replace

The spread on fascia work is wide because access drives it. Single story with a clean gutter run sits at the low end. Two stories, steep pitch, gutters that have to come off and go back on, that is the top of the range.

This is where most articles stop, and it is the only section that changes next spring.
Why Bare and Weathered Wood Keeps Getting Hit
Carpenter bees prefer bare, weathered, unpainted softwoods. Pine, cedar, cypress, redwood. UK Extension’s own prevention advice is to keep exterior wood surfaces painted, especially wood with a history of infestation. That’s part of why homes with Hardie board trim, which isn’t a softwood, see far less of this than homes with original cedar or pine fascia.
That advice is correct. It is also incomplete, and the gap is what frustrates homeowners.
Why Ordinary Paint Is a Temporary Defense
Paint works until it does not.
Standard exterior paint on a fascia board takes direct sun, wind-driven rain, and the freeze and thaw swings Kentucky winters hand out. It chalks. It thins at the edges. It shows up first as faded exterior house paint, and by the time you notice mold or mildew creeping along the same run, the wood underneath has already gone soft in spots. Within roughly five to seven years most homes are due for another coat, and by then the wood reads as weathered again to a bee looking for exactly that.
So the cycle runs: bees, repair, repaint, a few good years, bees again.
We stopped recommending repaint-only fixes on bee-prone fascia for that reason. It is not that paint fails to work. It is that it stops working right around the time everyone has forgotten why they painted in the first place.
The Permanent Version
What actually breaks the cycle is a finish that stays intact long enough to outlast the bees’ interest in that wood.
Rhino Shield is a ceramic coating rather than a paint. It goes on at 8 to 10 times the thickness of standard paint, with roughly 80 percent solid content and ceramic microspheres in the film. It is spray applied, which matters on trim, because spray carries the material into the joints, the end grain, and the underside of the board where a brush tends to skip.
It is also highly breathable by design, so trapped moisture can escape while water and humidity stay out. That is the property that matters most on fascia that has already taken on water once.
It carries a 25-year transferable warranty, and we run seasonal specials that make it easier to protect the whole exterior at once instead of one repair at a time. The point of the warranty isn’t the number. The point is that the board is still protected the year that a repainted board would have started weathering again.
To be straight about scope: coating goes over sound, repaired wood. It is not a repair in itself. Rotten or honeycombed boards get replaced first, then finished. The same principle applies whether the run in question is a fascia board, a deck carpenter bees have also moved into, or a full exterior repaint.
Carpenter Bee Season in Kentucky
Locally, carpenter bees are active from roughly March into August, with the drilling and nesting concentrated in spring.
That timing sets your calendar. Treat in spring when the galleries are active. Plug in late summer or fall once the new adults are out. Refinish the wood while the weather still cooperates, rather than leaving raw filler exposed through winter.
Kentucky’s older housing stock makes this a bigger issue here than in newer subdivisions. Louisville neighborhoods like Old Louisville and the Highlands are full of original wood cornices, soffits, and fascia runs, much of it softwood, much of it painted many times over many decades. That is prime carpenter bee habitat sitting fifteen feet in the air where nobody inspects it.

Can I coat over filled carpenter bee holes? Yes, once the fill has cured and the board is sound. Coating over a properly repaired board is the goal.
