You walk the house after a wet Kentucky week and there it is. A small mushroom, or a little cluster of them, pushing straight out of your wood trim or fascia. It looks wrong. Your gut is right.
We coat a lot of cedar, fascia, and trim across the Bluegrass, and the boards that fruit like this are almost always the same ones. Shaded, north-facing wood that never fully dries. Trim sitting under a gutter that has been quietly overflowing. What you can see on the surface is the smaller half of the story.
So here is the honest version, up front. A mushroom on your trim is not a stain you can scrub off. It is a sign that decay has already started inside the wood.
The Short Answer
A mushroom growing from wood trim is the fruiting body of a wood-rotting fungus. That means the fungus is already living inside and behind the board, not just on the face of it.
Do not simply knock the mushroom off. You need to find and stop the water feeding it, remove or replace any wood that has gone soft, and then protect the sound wood with a breathable coating so moisture cannot build back up. Fungicide by itself will not fix it, because it cannot reach the fungal network inside the wood.
What the mushroom is telling you, in short:
- The wood is staying wet enough to rot.
- A fungus is actively feeding on that wood.
- There is decay behind the surface you can see.
- The moisture source is still active right now.
What the Mushrooms Are Actually Telling You
The fruiting body and the hidden mycelia
Think of the mushroom like an apple on a tree. The apple is not the tree, just the part you happen to notice.
The mushroom is the fruiting body. The actual organism is a network of fine threads called mycelia, and that network is already running through the wood. By the time a fungus puts up a fruiting body, it has usually been feeding for a while. Plant pathologists with the University of California IPM program note that a visible fruiting body generally signals advanced decay, and that the damage can extend well beyond the exact spot where the mushroom appears.
So the mushroom is not the problem. It is the proof of the problem. That is why knocking it off changes nothing. The fungus stays, the wood keeps breaking down, and it fruits again the next time conditions are right.
Why it needs moisture (the 20 percent rule)
Wood-rotting fungi cannot work on dry wood. They need it wet.
As a rule of thumb, wood has to stay above roughly 20 percent moisture content before decay fungi can really get going. Well-maintained exterior wood on a dry, well-drained wall usually sits below that line. When a board is fruiting, it is telling you it has been sitting wetter than that, and for long enough to matter. That is actually the useful part of a mushroom: it points straight at a moisture problem you might never have found on your own.
Brown rot vs white rot (quick identification)
You do not need to name the exact fungus. But the type of rot tells you how the wood is failing.
- Brown rot: the wood turns brown, dries out, and cracks into small cubes. It crumbles when you press it. This is the crumbly, cube-cracking look most people picture as dry rot.
- White rot: the wood turns pale, soft, and stringy or spongy, and can look almost bleached.

Where the Water Is Coming From
Since the mushroom is really a moisture alarm, the real work is finding the leak. On Bluegrass homes, the usual suspects are:
- Failed or missing flashing above trim, windows, and doors.
- Clogged or overflowing gutters that pour water down the fascia.
- Open seams and failed caulk joints that let water wick into end grain.
- Poor grading or splashback that keeps lower trim wet.
- Deep shade on north-facing walls, where boards never catch enough sun to dry.
- Cracked or peeling paint that let water in and then trapped it against the wood.

Assess how far the rot has gone
Grab a screwdriver or an awl and gently press the wood around the growth.
- If the wood is firm and the tip will not sink in, the decay may still be shallow and early.
- If it feels soft, spongy, or punky, or the tip sinks in easily, the rot is deeper than the surface.
- Check the boards on either side too. Rot travels along the grain, so the damage is usually wider than the single spot that fruited.
Be honest about what you find. Soft wood is compromised wood.
DIY for minor, surface-only cases
If the board is still solid and only the surface is affected, a careful homeowner can often handle it.
- Remove the mushroom and any loose, punky material. Bag it so spores do not spread.
- Let the area dry out fully. That can take several dry days.
- Treat the wood with an appropriate exterior wood preservative or fungicide, following the label.
- Only patch, fill, or prime once the wood is genuinely sound and dry.
The mistake to avoid: sealing or painting over wood that is still damp or still soft. You will trap the moisture and the fungus, and it will come right back.
When to call a pro (most cases)
Most fruiting-trim situations are already past the easy DIY line. Bring in a professional when:
- The wood is soft, spongy, or crumbles when pressed.
- The rot is spreading to nearby boards.
- The affected trim is structural, like fascia, soffit, or a load-bearing surround.
- You cannot find or reach the moisture source.
- The growth keeps returning after you clean it off.
Hidden rot behind a board is exactly the kind of expensive surprise a trained eye catches before it spreads.
How to Stop It From Coming Back (the part competitors skip)
Here is where most advice quits. Kill the fungus, replace the wood, done. But that skips the step that decides whether you are standing here again in two years.
Step one never changes: fix the moisture. Repair the flashing, clear the gutters, close the seams, improve the drainage. There is no shortcut around this, and no product replaces it.
The wood itself matters too. Bare wood drinks water, and paint-only wood does a little better until the film cracks and starts trapping water against the board. Wet wood is what rot needs.
