Every spring we get the same call. A homeowner walks the yard after the thaw, coffee in hand, and finds paint curled off the siding in long sheets. Not little flakes. Whole layers, peeling back like old wallpaper.
What surprises them most is where it shows up. The sunny south wall and the shady north wall, both lifting at the same time. That pattern tells us something, and it is rarely just the cold.

The Short Answer
Sheet peeling after winter means water got into or behind the paint film, froze, expanded, and broke the bond. Weak surface prep or too many old coats usually make it worse.
Do not repaint over it. New paint on loose paint just buys you one more season before it lifts again.
Here is what to do, in order:
- Remove every bit of loose paint back to a sound, tight edge.
- Find and fix the moisture source (gutters, caulk, flashing, grade).
- Prep the surface to clean, dry, and dull, then prime any bare wood.
- Recoat with a flexible, breathable system that can move with the wood.
A contained patch on firm wood is a fair DIY job. Widespread sheet peeling, soft wood, or a water source you cannot find is a job for a pro.
Why Paint Peels in Sheets After a Kentucky Winter
Freeze-thaw cycling (the real culprit behind the cold)
Cold air alone does not strip paint. Water does.
Moisture works its way into hairline cracks, open caulk joints, and the back of the siding. When the temperature drops, that water freezes and expands by roughly nine percent. That expansion pushes against the paint film from behind.
Then it thaws. Then it freezes again. Each cycle pries the film a little further from the wood, until one day a whole sheet lets go.
Why Kentucky’s freeze-thaw is especially hard on paint
People assume the coldest states have the worst paint damage. On siding, the opposite is often true.
A place that stays frozen solid all winter runs through the freeze-thaw cycle far fewer times. Central Kentucky does not stay frozen. Our winters cross 32 degrees again and again, some weeks daily.
Every crossing of that freezing point is another expansion event prying at the bond. More crossings, more prying, more peeling. That is why a Bluegrass winter can be rougher on a paint film than a deep northern freeze that locks up once and holds.
Moisture from the house and the roofline
Freeze-thaw needs water to work with, and a lot of that water comes from the house itself.
The usual sources we find:
- Clogged or ice-filled gutters spilling water down the wall
- Failed caulk around windows, trim, and board joints
- Ice dams backing water up under the eaves
- Interior humidity from showers and cooking migrating out through the wall as vapor
- Sprinklers, splash-back, or siding sitting too close to the soil
When that vapor cannot escape and gets trapped under a rigid paint film, it pushes the paint off from the inside. This is why peeling often shows up on shaded, damp walls that never see driving rain. Building-science research from the USDA Forest Products Laboratory has long shown that the moisture content of the wood is one of the biggest factors in how long a finish lasts on it.
Prep and layering failures that cause sheet release
Here is the part that decides whether paint peels in flakes or in sheets.
Flaking usually means the top coat failed. Sheet peeling usually means a deeper layer let go and took everything above it along for the ride.
That points back to how the wall was painted. Common causes we see:
- Paint applied over dirt, chalk, gloss, or damp wood, so it never truly bonded
- Primer skipped on bare or repaired wood
- Latex laid over old oil-based paint without proper prep (incompatible layers)
- Many old coats stacked up over decades, heavy and brittle, releasing together
When five or six coats have built up over the years, they start to behave like one thick, stiff shell. Freeze-thaw movement finds the weakest layer in that stack, and the whole thing comes off in panels.

What to Do Right Now (Step by Step)
Stabilize and protect the exposed wood
Bare wood after a thaw is a clock, not just a cosmetic problem.
Kentucky springs bring rain, and exposed siding drinks it in. Wet wood swells, feeds mildew, and over a few weeks starts down the road to rot. The longer it sits open, the more you are repairing later.
If you cannot recoat right away, at least get a coat of exterior primer on the bare spots to buy time and keep water out.
DIY-friendly repair for a contained area
If the peeling is limited to one wall or a few boards, and the wood underneath is firm, you can handle it yourself.
A simple sequence:
- Scrape all loose paint until the edges stop lifting.
- Run the scraper flat across the surrounding paint (the scraper-drag test). Anything that pops up now was going to fail later, so take it off.
- Sand the hard edges smooth so they do not telegraph through the new coat.
- Clean off dust, chalk, and mildew, then let the wood dry fully.
- Prime any bare wood, then apply your finish coats.
The drag test is the step most homeowners skip, and it is the one that keeps your fresh patch from peeling around the edges next spring.
When to bring in a pro
Some situations are past a weekend fix. Bring in a pro when:
- The peeling covers large areas or several sides of the house
- You cannot find where the water is getting in
- The wood feels soft or spongy, or shows signs of wood rot
- You are on your second or third round of the same repair
That last point matters most. If you have repainted the same wall twice and it keeps peeling, the paint is not the problem. The system is.
How to Keep It From Peeling Again (the Part Competitors Skip)
Most guides stop at “scrape, prime, repaint.” Then you are back in the same spot in a few winters. Here is why that keeps happening.
Standard exterior paint is a thin, fairly rigid film. In a good case it lasts about five to seven years, and less when freeze-thaw is working on it season after season.
Wood moves. It expands and contracts with heat, cold, and moisture. A brittle paint stack cannot keep up with that movement, so the bond fatigues and, eventually, sheets off. Every winter of expansion and contraction is another round of stress on a film that was never built to flex.
This is where a ceramic coating behaves differently than paint.
